Qianmen Street, south of Tiananmen Square officially opened this Monday. It has a centuries old history of being a commercial centre in Beijing. The street has been totally renovated and most of the architecture has a very traditional Chinese feel. Despite this old design, the stores are all modern and 103 are now open for business. The majority of the stores are famous Chinese retailers and restaurants, mixed with international brands. The street is supposed to be Beijing’s Fifth Avenue, but the brands seemed to be more high street than high fashion. I only had an hour at lunchtime so I didn’t get to see much. However it’s definitely worth a trip one weekend to wander around and explore. The street is so long, it even has its own tramway if your feet get tired.
